California Black Freedom Fund

Introducing our 2023 Impact Report!

The Black Freedom Fund was first established as an inflection point for racial justice grantmaking in 2021. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police, the philanthropic sector galvanized in response, pledging commitment to the work to advance racial equity and justice.

Today, the Black Freedom Fund has continued to grow and evolve to ensure that Black powerbuilding and movement-based organizations in California have the sustained investments and resources they need to eradicate systemic and institutional racism.

We’re excited to share CBFF’s 2023 Impact Report: Building Power for a Racially Just California, where you’ll find information on our work and grantmaking over the last year.

In 2023, we distributed $3.5 million in grants to 75 Black organizations across California and awarded $7.5 million in grants to our three statewide network partners: Black Equity Collective, California Black Power Network, and LIVEFREE CA.

Check out the report now to learn more about our work so far, from transforming from a five-year initiative into a stand-alone organization to launching the Legal Education, Advocacy, and Defense (LEAD) initiative.
